WHEN it comes to putting novels on stage this is about as good as it gets.
Martin Sherman's adroit adaptation manages to capture subtle plot intricacies as well as being a superbly presented piece of memorable theatre.
The story is an exploration of the British in India. It centres around the charmingly nave Doctor Aziz being accused of rape by the white fianc of one of the local officials.
We are shown a myriad of characters, ranging from instantly identifiable bigots to multi-faceted philosophers and splendidly frustrated old ladies. There are also the colours and smells of India, whole vistas suggested by a stunning set and a beautifully understated musical accompaniment.
This is a true gem from Shared Experience.
Runs until Saturday.
