RAMPANT Romsey Town were in giant-killing mood last night as they beat Division 1 side Bournemouth Poppies 2-1 in the third round of the Wessex League Cup at the By-Pass Ground.
The Division 2 promotion pushers struck through Simon De'Ath on 20 minutes from a free-kick on the edge of the 18-yard area.
And then the Romsey hot-shot netted from the penalty spot in the 40th minute after Adie Briscoe had levelled for Poppies.
There was a welcome win for Division 1 strugglers Hamble ASSC away at Division 2 high-fliers Shaftesbury, Mark Smith (35) and a Neil Ward penalty after 65 minutes seeing off Jim Chandler's reply for the Dorset club on 75 minutes.
As expected, SWL champions Winchester City cruised through 5-0 at the expense of Division 3 outfit Netley Central Sports at Portsmouth Road.
First-half strikes by Ian Mancey and Jamie Laidlaw added to a ten-minute spell midway through the second period by Toby Redwood, Laidlaw and a Gareth Bull own goal.
Alex Pike's Hamworthy United booked a fourth round date with Tuesday's giant-killers Hayling after napping Downton 5-2.
Soloists Sean Bartlett, Darren Orchard, Keith Middleton, Steve Gilbert and Scott Bedward on target for the home side with Matt Guy and Dan Smith responding for the Wiltshire club.
