JONO McLean has made an "immediate impression" during his trial for Hampshire's second XI.
The Johannesburg batsman scored 266 runs at a healthy 88.66 average, including an innings of 107 against Middlesex at Bournemouth, as well as another century (105) in a one-day friendly against Bangladesh Under-19s.
Tony Middleton, who has since been replaced by Giles White as second XI coach so he can concentrate on the academy, said: "We see several trialists a season in the second XI but he was one who made an immediate impression.
"We spent three to four weeks looking at him towards the end of the season.
"His all round game is good technically, he's got a mature attitude and he played a couple of innings for the second XI that showed he's got real ability. He's also a good solid character."
