LEE Chudy ensured AFC Newbury became the fifth Sydenhams Wessex League through to the last 64 of the FA Vase at Faraday Road last night.
The former Newport IoW and Basingstoke Town winger scored twice in the delayed second round tie against North Leigh, which ended 2-1 in Newbury's favour.
Guy Whittingham's men now entertain Sandhurst Town of the Combined Counties League on December 11.
Chudy struck with a stooping header in the opening seconds and then doubled the Berkshire club's lead with a close-range finish on 56 minutes.
But he had to share star billing with goalkeeper Dave Hook who, having been beaten by Robbie Wyatt's 71st-minute reply for North Leigh, saved a late penalty to ward off extra time.
Newbury stalwart Jim Goslin said: "It was a bizarre penalty decision and we still don't know what it was given for. Thankfully Dave Hook saved it anyway and he also did well to stop another shot with his outstretched leg. It was quite an exciting game."
Christchurch will not be joining Newbury in the next round. Pete Moore's side were beaten by a single Mark Pocock strike in a 1-0 replay defeat by Bitton.
Revised local third round draw: AFC Newbury v Sandhurst Town, Deal Town v Fareham Town, Gosport Borough v Didcot Town, Lymington & New Milton v Wroxham, Thamesmead Town v Winchester City.
