MARKS off The Needles continue to produce some excellent cod.
New Milton fisherman Barry Hobbs was the latest person to sample the action when he went afloat on the Lymington-based boat 'Tompkat', skippered by John Skeggs.
Hobby used squid to tempt the best cod of the session, which tipped the scales down to 24lb 6oz.
A good variety of species were recorded during the Rovers catch-and-release open held at Stokes Bay. Competitors beached a number of rays, dogfish, smoothhound, gurnard, pout and whiting.
The total length category was won by Martin Mogridge with 12 fish for 300 points, followed by Ray Pope (272) and Dave Ware (271). The prize for the longest fish went to Chris Clark for a 62cm dogfish.
The final match in the series will be held on December 9 at Lee-on-the-Solent, fishing from 8pm to 11.30pm. Tickets, costing just £5, are strictly pre-book only. Full details from Rovers Tackle on 01329 220354.
The Milford shingle bank was the setting for the penultimate round of the four-a-side Neptune League. The pick of the fish was a 7lb 4oz small-eyed ray bagged by Alan McGuiness. The team event was won by Bournemouth & District A with 9lb 6.5oz.
With just one match remaining Bournemouth & District A head the total weight category with 46lb 2.5oz, followed by Wessex Angling (45lb 10.75oz) and Boscombe & Southbourne A (42lb 8oz). Bournemouth & District A also head the points section with 17.
The final match in the series will be held at Avon beach on December 13 with fishing from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.
The deep-water section at Browndown was the setting for the latest match in the Allan's Marine super league fixture.
Southampton's John Williams had the narrowest of victories with 7lb to get the better of Dave Ware, who was just one ounce further adrift. The next round will be held on December 12 at Eastney. Tickets are strictly pre-book - full details from the crew at Allan's Marine 023 9267 1833.
Both boat and shore anglers are catered for this weekend during three different open events.
On Saturday evening the Hamworthy RBL stage a pegged open at Baiter around the shores of Poole harbour with fishing from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. Flounders are expected to dominate during the event, which has a £15 price including pools. The fixture also doubles up as a Penn point fixture. On Sunday the Lymington club stage their cod open boat competition, which has a £250 top prize. The event is being sponsored by Glen Grieve of Quality Block Products.
Fishing will be from 8.30am to 2.30pm and competitors are allowed to fish from either charter or their own boats. Tickets have been set at £12 for adults and £6 for juniors. A £500 top prize is on offer on Sunday during the Portchster Sporting AC annual open, which is being sponsored by Hansfords of Fareham.
