Winchester City Flyers' season finally took off in style on Sunday with an excellent win in Bournemouth.
Flyers' first half performance, although fairly comprehensive in possession terms, was still riddled with the individual errors that have plagued them.
City went into the interval one up courtesy of a superb individual effort from Holly Parton. Flyers had the lion's share of the play, but seemed unable to push through and make the match safe. In the second period the young Bournemouth side began impressively and kept keeper Lee Thubron busy. Bex Cleary added to her growing goal tally in the 50th minute to settle her team-mates' nerves, but the lead lasted just five minutes, Bournemouth dragging it back to 2-1. City responded well and with the football starting to flow created several good chances. Aimee Maidment, promoted from the Reserves last week, came on as sub and quickly put Flyers 3-1 up. Flyers settled, at last playing the sort of football that had them promoted last season. Cleary added her second, and Maidment added goal number five after Gemma Ryan had struck the post. Just two minutes later Maidment completed her hat-trick from outside the penalty area. The last word went to the irrepressible Parton, who made it seven in the final minute. The success of the 15-year-old Maidment gives the Flyers management a huge boost ahead of their local derby with Winchester United at Chilcomb.
