IT WAS ladies' night at Andover golf club recently as the women's section held their AGM.
Outgoing captain Liz Paul, who handed over to Wendy Plummer, reported a successful year with a record number of women taking part. Her charity, Cystic Fibrosis, was also a winner, with £820 collected during the year.
There were a number of successes among the ladies at various open competitions, Sarah Bulpitt taking the honours at Donnington, Wendy Plummer and Liz Paul winning the Sandford Springs Open, and Margaret Ashley winning the Upavon Ladies Invitation Day. Junior Jade Scott once again showed her promise and became the Hampshire Junior Girls' champion when she won at Hockley.
At the prize-giving Sue Davis confirmed her consistent form during 2002 by picking up the Golfer of the Year trophy, which is awarded to the player with the best record in the monthly medals and nominated knock-out competitions.
Meanwhile, for the men, the weather at the January medal competition certainly played a part in the scores returned; particularly in the Sunday competition, where the competition standard scratch score was a two-over-par 72. Saturday's impressive Division 1 winner was Dave Perren (playing off 12) whose fine and consistent golf swing helped him to a superb score of gross 77, net 65. Dave also deservedly won the scratch prize, and easily beat Mervyn Perry (9) into second place, with Perry carding a net 70. Ron Marshall (14) also produced an impressive round of golf to win the Division 2 title with an excellent net score of 67. New member Mark Kavanagh (14) also made his mark by securing second spot with a fine net 69.
Junior member Jamie Dockree (20) maintained his fine form in medal competitions by winning Division 3 with a net 69, and he just shaded it from Bob Flaherty (23) on countback.
The difficult conditions on Sunday meant high scores were the order of the day, and the best of these in Division 1 secured pole position for Dave McAdam (11). His net 73 was good enough to pip John Rogers (8) on countback with Rogers' gross 81 good enough to win the scratch prize.
Tom Smith (13) was back in the winners' circle with his net 72 good enough to win him the Division 2 title on countback. Les Britten (18) was the best of a bunch of three others also on net 72, and he took second spot.
Anil Patel (24) was the only player to break net 70 on Sunday, and his 69 gave him the Division 3 title, beating Adam Cook (26) by two shots.
