IT was very much a case of horses for courses when the favourite Jawhari held off a sustained challenge of the top weight Budelli to win the Daily Echo-sponsored apprentice race at sun-drenched Goodwood last night.
The Terry Mills eight-year-old won at the track three weeks ago and took a similar race at Goodwood only last Friday.
Winning jockey Robert Miles will always have fond memories of the horse - he provided him with his first success under rules earlier this season.
Miles, who had a comfortable success last Friday, however conceded that last night's victory was much tougher.
Robert, 20, said: "He's got the heart of a lion. We were beaten 100 yards out but he gives you absolutely everything. He won't be beaten.
Mills, who is in fine form himself, was certainly impressed by the efforts of his young jockey who joined him almost two years ago.
"He gave him a really good ride. I thought we were beaten. He will make a really good jockey if he keeps his feet on the ground."
The winner and the runner-up drew clear of the rest of the field inside the final furlong but it was only in the shadow of the post that Jawhari finally got his head in front.
Budelli was ironically a last-minute mount for Ryan Moore, son of trainer Gary Moore. He was having his first ride for eight weeks after breaking his hand playing football in a stable lads' match.
Echo executive Iain Donaldson presented the trophy to the Epsom trainer, who also owns the horse.
