A FAMILY of seven owe their lives to a smoke alarm after a blaze threatened to sweep through their home in the Chandler's Ford area.

Firefighters were called to Chepstow Close in the Valley Park area after a fire broke out early in the morning at the rear of the house.

It spread rapidly to the kitchen, bathroom window and roof.

Two fire engines were sent to the scene and

firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze, which was thought to have been sparked by an oil burner.

Firefighters said the family of seven were lucky to be alive.

It was the simple fact that they had a smoke alarm fitted which probably saved their lives.

Leading firefighter Sean Gray, of Eastleigh Fire Station's White Watch, said: "Not only had residents been alerted to the danger but they were also able to raise the alarm quickly and evacuate safely.

"We frequently give out messages about how the smoke alarm saves lives and this story proves how essential they are.

"This family are thankful to be alive and all for the sake of a fitted working alarm."

The householder said the fire alarm had been very valuable but did not wish to make any

further comment to the Daily Echo.

Leading firefighter Gray said: "We are currently providing free home safety checks which involve a thorough check of the home."

They provide free advice in relation to possible fire safety improvements, constructing an escape plan and where necessary fitting free smoke detectors.
