A PENSIONER suffered a broken collarbone when a supermarket automatic door fell on her.

Doreen Groves was leaving Sainsbury's in Hedge End when the 10ft automatic door collapsed, hitting her head and shoulder.

She was taken to Southampton General Hospital where X-rays showed her collarbone was broken.

Managers at Hedge End Retail Park have launched an investigation into the incident.

Doreen, 72, had just finished her weekly shop with husband Denis when the accident happened.

Denis, 73, is unable to walk so his wife had gone in to fetch an electronic buggy for him. As she was leaving the store with the buggy the door hit her.

Mrs Groves said: "I thought I had had it. I thought I was lucky to be alive. I was halfway through the door when it just came down on top of me. It was very heavy. It must have been about 10ft high by three or four foot wide.

"It was terrible. The two first aid girls were very good. They looked after me and called an ambulance.

"At the hospital they X-rayed me and the doctor said my collarbone was broken."

Doctors told Doreen, of Kingsfold Avenue, Townhill Park, that her collarbone would take up to six weeks to heal. She will have to return to Southampton General Hospital in December for further x-rays to see how the break is mending.

"I am black and blue and it is still very painful when I move," she said.

"I am not very strong myself, but if it had hit a child it could have killed them. It just came straight down."

A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's said: "We are very sorry that Mrs Groves was injured by the door leading to our store. Hedge End Park which manages the centre is investigating how this happened.

"Two of our first-aiders attended to her when the accident happened and we hope she is feeling better soon."

A representative from Hedge End Park refused to comment on the incident.
