HAMPSHIRE'S Matthew Blackey stayed in the hunt for a pass score at European Tour Qualifying School Finals at San Roque, Spain yesterday, making steady progress after a sensational third round.
The Hayling Island resident carded a fourth-round 74 in testing conditions to move 11 slots up the leaderboard and into a tie for 41st place as the chase for the 35 available cards for the 2005 European Tour hotted up.
Blackey started with a birdie but gave the shot back at the par-four third hole. Worse was to come when he doubled the par-three eighth, but the 33-year-old regrouped and birdies at 11 and 16 secured a two over total for the day.
Blackey's sizzling Saturday score of 68 had hauled him up from the depths of the field and was badly needed as yesterday the field was cut from 168 players to just 75. They will compete today and tomorrow for a further 36 holes to decide who makes it on to the tour in 2005.
Big names who failed to make the final cut included Warren Bennett, Paul Eales, Gary Orr and former Ryder Cup star Peter Baker.
