Gabrielle, Portsmouth Guildhall
THE Queen of British soul, Gabrielle, began her new tour in style at Portsmouth Guildhall on Thursday night.
Despite arriving on stage late and spending the rest ofthe night apologising, Gabrielle, pictured above, treated fans to a mix of her greatest hits and material from her new album, Play To Win.
Opening with Give And Take, Gabrielle eased through a 100-minute set, playing all the favourites including recent single Ten Years' Time, the Burt Bacharach tune Walk On By, Rise, Sunshine and When A Woman. Highlights were the sublimeOut Of Reach and a fantastic version of the Motown-tinged crowd-pleaser Give Me A Little More Time.
However, the biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for an acoustic-led version of her debut hit single, Dreams, which seemed to appease the slightly rowdy Portsmouth crowd.
Also deserving a special mention is singer-songwriter Jamie Scott, who warmed up the waiting crowd with ease.
He was a late addition to the line-up, having been set to support Beverley Knight's tour, which has now been postponed until next year
