Oh! What a Lovely War, RAODS Plaza Theatre, Romsey
IN this time of remembrance, RAODS has chosen to mark the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War with its current production.
It should be proud of its effort to mark the occasion.
Director Neil Thorpe writes about the show 'having a profound effect' on him as a school performer.
The effect was also evident on the audience.
The cast of 16 actors take 90 roles in a series of sketches in this fast-moving satire on the First World War. Facts about the war are displayed on a screen above the stage, which adds to the poignancy and futility of the endeavour.
The company in this ensemble production have ample opportunity to display their individual talents and take full advantage of it.
The lighting and effects are outstanding, with full use of noise to demonstrate conditions prevailing at the time.
