PASSERS-BY stopped for a moment as the Field of Remembrance was dedicated at Winchester Cathedral.
Members of the public paused for reflection as the Last Post was sounded and standards dipped in honour of those who died defending the country.
The Rev Canon Charles Stewart led the prayers and asked that soldiers in Iraq be remembered. He said: "We remember those of past wars but also those who serve overseas in harm's way."
The Mayor of Winchester, Cecily Sutton, laid the first remembrance cross, followed by other dignitaries from the Royal British Legion.
Brigadier Ron Lonsdale, county president, recited the Exhortation, then Derek Green, Winchester branch chairman, delivered the Kohima Epitaph.
Tomorrow there will be a two-minute silence in the city centre. The service of remembrance will take place in the cathedral on Sunday.
