Fareham came from behind to beat one-time National Cup final rivals Slough 2-1 at Henry Cort and so strengthen their mid-table South Premier League, Division 2 standing.
Slough, once European top dogs, stunned their hosts with an early Raja Shoaib goal.
But Fareham shook off the effects of that setback to control the game and level matters from a Scott Shirley penalty stroke.
South African Scott Barton began to control the midfield after the break and as Fareham began to play some of their best hockey for some time, Jim Moseley got the winner, tucking the ball under the body of Ben Chadda, the advancing Slough goalkeeper.
"It was the first time we'd played Slough since the cup final back in 1982," reminisced Nigel Cook, a slim and tricky left-winger in those halcyon Bath Lane days.
Mark Dixon converted a penalty corner as Fareham's 2nd XI held Oxford Hawks 1-1 in the demanding South Open Premier League.
"The league is brimming with National League bench players and is a very high standard," Cook pointed out.
"To stay in the league at the end of the season will be a major plus for the club as we're blooding plenty of juniors in that side."
