Gosport Borough exacted revenge for their 5-0 league defeat at the hands of Winchester City by knocking Neil Hards's men out of the Russell Cotes Cup at Privett Park last night.
But Borough were taken to a penalty shoot-out by a City side who started with just five first-team regulars but brought on hotshots Jamie Musselwhite and Jamie Laidlaw for the second half.
The pendulum swung Borough's way early on with Bjay Green heading home Darren Robson's ninth-minute corner and then Pabs N'Doye cutting inside Ian Buckman and slipping a shot under keeper Simon Arthur 20 minutes later.
Musselwhite began the City fightback with a 25-yard deflected shot on 65 minutes.
And with just two minutes of normal time remaining John Cripps, just on as a Gosport substitute, pulled down City reserve striker Jaswinder Chahal, inviting Kevin Brewster to equalise from the spot.
History repeated itself nine minutes into extra time when Cripps again found former BAT youngster Chahal too hot to handle and this time tripped him up.
Again Brewster did the penalty honours only for Neil Scammell to level matters at 3-3 after latching onto Perry Holland's pass.
But having excelled themselves from the spot during the game, Winchester flopped 4-1 in the shoot-out with only Liam Green finding the target. Musselwhite had his effort saved by Mark Brown and then Laidlaw smacked one against the bar.
Gosport, in contrast, were lethal with Robson, Graham Lindsey, Holland and Cripps ensuring a safe passage through to the third round.
"That's twice in three seasons we've gone out of the Cup on penalties at Gosport," Winchester secretary Ray Murphy pointed out.
In the Wessex League Fareham took the spoils in a 1-0 home win over Bemerton with ex-Pompey striker Warren Hunt bagging the 48th-minute winner.
