STEVE WIGLEY has set his sights on the massive derby against Portsmouth on Saturday to "kickstart" Saints' season.

A disappointing 2-2 draw with West Brom kept Saints in the bottom three and wasn't the start the club were hoping for to their 'crunch month' of November.

With only one league win for Saints all season, Wigley, left, could well do without the interruption of a Carling Cup match at Watford tomorrow night as he aims to lift his side ahead of the vital match against Pompey.

He said: "It's a massive game. Any time you play your local rivals, and with the rivalry that exists between the two clubs it wouldn't matter where you are in the league or who the manager is. It's a massive game for both teams.

"We're looking to kick-start our season, there's no two ways about that.

"We're having to work hard about everything we do at the minute."

He added: "I believe winning breeds confidence no matter what sport or what walk of life you're in. Individual performances then improve and then the group does too. At the moment that hasn't happened for us but we haven't gone under in any game, we've been in every game.

"I feel like a record stuck to be honest because we're saying the same things every week, but I have to take the good things out of the game."

After only ten Premiership matches in charge Wigley is already being asked about his own future - in particular in reference to his comment after six games that if he hadn't done much better six games later he wouldn't expect to still be in charge.

"You could say that in that six-game period I've been minus nine players," said Wigley, still searching for his first league win in charge - indeed, Saints have only picked up five points out of a possible 30 during his time in charge.

"To be fair I answered the question honestly at the time but I didn't think I'd have nine international players missing.

"I've not cried about it because I believe the players you pick, you have to believe in them. What they've done is make sure we've kept our head above water in a difficult period. Any club in the country would have struggled to carry the injury list we've had."

Wigley added: "Where we are at the moment is an added pressure and I told the players last week there would be less pressure at Arsenal than against West Brom because people don't expect.

"The fans expected this weekend and they'll expect next Saturday and they are entitled to.

"I'd rather not have the extra game this week. That's not being disrespectful to the competition because it's something we'd like to progress in.

"But the position we're in - starting to get people back from injury - I would like to have a run (of league games).

"My emotions are up and down but I've got no thoughts of leaving."
