EMOTIONALLY scarred Bobby Morrow (Colin Farrell), who was orphaned at an early age, moves to swinging 80s New York to live with his gay friend Jonathan (Dallas Roberts), in a cramped flat with Jonathan's vivacious room-mate Clare (Robin Wright Penn).
As teenagers, Bobby (Erik Smith) and Jonathan (Harris Allan) were inseparable and they shared a gay dalliance of sorts, which helped Jonathan come to terms with his sexuality.
Clare is immediately taken by the painfully naive adult Bobby and she initiates a passionate affair, much to Jonathan's obvious jealousy.
When Bobby responds to Jonathan's desire by flirting with him too, the housemates become the three points of a dangerous love triangle, which becomes a most unconventional family when Clare falls pregnant and the two men agree to help her raise the child.
