THE great and good of Southampton turned out to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the naming of the tug Calshot.

The ceremony was held at the Queen Elizabeth II passenger terminal where dignitaries wished the vessel well as it set a course for the future.

Soldiers from 17 Port and Maritime Regiment formed a guard of honour to welcome the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mary Fagan, along with Southampton Mayor Dennis Harryman.

Guest of honour at the event was Susan Tatton-Brown, granddaughter of Hilda White, who launched the tug in 1929.

Mrs Tatton-Brown repeated the words used by her grandmother when she sent the boat sliding into the water.

Talks are currently underway between Southampton City Council and the Tug Tender Calshot Trust to pass ownership from the council to the trust.

The trust hopes to restore the grand old vessel to its former glory.
