PUPILS were going bananas at the launch of a free fruit in schools scheme that aims to tackle the problem of childhood obesity.

Hampshire Cricket's opening batsman James Adams joined the four to six-year-old pupils for the event at Marchwood Infant School in Twiggs Lane, yesterday.

The government scheme, now in place across schools in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, is the biggest childhood nutrition initiative since the launch of free milk.

Every four to six year-old in local education authority maintained schools is now eligible for a free piece of fruit daily.

The initiative's overall aim is to reduce the risk of poor health and obesity among young children and encourage them to eat fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.

Head teacher Maureen Green said: "The morning went brilliantly and the children loved their bananas.''
