THIS is the vision for a city precinct - dominated by a giant paved S for Shirley.
As work continues on the multi-million-pound shopping parade revamp in Shirley High Street, the Daily Echo can reveal the first artist's impression of the completed development.
At the centre of the new piazza is a sweeping raised area, dotted with seats, trees and benches, in the shape of a giant S for Shirley.
The listed Golden Jubilee fountain, which has been taken away for cleaning this week, will sit in pride of place at the top of the S-shaped area.
The "S for Shirley" feature is part of Southampton City Council's public art scheme, and has been designed by south London artist Chris Tipping.
It will be overlooked by a giant glass tower belonging to the new Sainsbury's superstore.
The precinct also includes a new housing office and refurbished library, and the first shops are due to be reopened before the end of the year.
At the rear of Shirley High Street, a car park is being extended to provide space for 235 shoppers to leave vehicles.
Developers are due to hand over to supermarket giant Sainsbury's next year, and the store is due to be opened some time during the summer.
The scheme has already been given the thumbs-up by some residents.
Taxi driver Sharon Donnarumma, 47, of Porlock Road, Millbrook, said: "I think it's very modern for the surroundings, but maybe it will make the council do something about the rest of Shirley. I only hope it doesn't become a target for vandals."
