YOBS left a trail of damage at North Baddesley Junior School at Fleming Avenue during Monday evening.
Wooden and concrete benches were thrown into the school pond and a shed filled with toys was trashed. Netball posts were thrown about and litter bins tipped over. The attack came a week after golf balls were hurled through seven classroom windows. PC Paddy Coveney believes quite a large number of youths were involved in Monday's incident.
"Those benches were very heavy. A large group of youths must have been responsible for this. There was a lot of destruction and the school is very concerned that it might be targeted again," said PC Coveney. He believes the golf ball incident may be linked to a theft at Chilworth Golf Club where a number of balls went missing in October.
Head teacher Sue Smith said: "We've spent a great deal of money in developing the school grounds and they have been trashed with total disregard to the children. The shed was pulled from its concrete base and lying on its side. I must thank the two policemen who waded into the pond and got the tables out."
Borough council neighbourhood wardens recovered some of the play equipment that went missing. Anyone with information about either incidents should contact PC Coveney at Romsey police station on 0845 045 45 45.
