FOR the first time in Eastleigh, police officers on the beat are stepping out in body armour.
The tougher stab-proof vest, gives extra protection from sharp knives and needles, and is also partially bulletproof.
It's part of a £2m investment for the Hampshire police force that will soon see all its 3,700 officers wearing the extra safe vests.
Eastleigh PC Chris Challis, is pleased with the new protective vest and said it is much more comfortable than previous armour that is worn by officers on a case by case basis.
He said: "It's measured and fitted for the individual officer by the manufacturer so it's very comfortable, and it offers greater personal protection.
"It's also very strong and durable and can be cleaned easily."
So far the response to the new armour has been positive both from the police officers and the public.
"I haven't had to put mine into practise and I don't know anyone who has," said PC Challis.
"Eastleigh actually has quite a low crime rate and the vests are more for the prevention of what could happen, and it adds a greater sense of security."
The protective body armour was selected for Hampshire police after vigorous testing. Police chiefs said the new armour is a sign of the times and all part of the health and safety for officers.
