AN ISLE of Wight school is one of the greenest in the country after winning a national competition to collect old Yellow Pages directories.
Youngsters at St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School in Ventnor have won a national award after amassing 1,350 copies of the famous yellow book - the equivalent of nearly 12 per pupil.
The school was named one of 12 recycling champions in the national finals of the 2003/04 Yellow Woods Challenge, a competition organised by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and local councils.
Headteacher Angela Hewkin said: "I am so proud of the children for winning the UK finals of the Yellow Woods Challenge.
"I'd also like to thank the families and local community who helped us collect so many Yellow Pages.
"The money we've won will help us to support our gardening club, buying equipment and a greenhouse, and will also help towards purchasing ICT equipment."
