IF YOU want to escape supernatural going-ons this weekend, there's still chance to catch a double-bill of spook-free comedy and drama at the Maskers studio theatre in Shirley.

Two very different one-act plays are being performed under the first-time directorship of Moyra Allen and Andrew Smith.

Cheek! by Howard Barker revolves around two layabouts whose thoughts rarely travel above their belts. Director Moyra Allen says: "It's a powerful play that uncovers the intense feelings and gentleness hidden by a youth culture of laddish behaviour."

This drama is followed by a play by Joe Orton.

The Good & Faithful Servant, directed by Andrew Smith, revolves around a retiring commissionaire, a cleaner, a young loafer and the typist he has put in the family way. These are all items for Mrs Vealfoy's agenda - the smiling face of Personnel has a file on us all and, should your private life be involved, she'll be the first to inform you of the fact!

This bleak, one-act comedy is presented using a minimal set and screen projections.

Maskers Studio, off Emsworth Road, Shirley. Tonight and tomorrow. Performance: 7.30pm. Tickets: £4. Box office: 023 8055 1489.
