CALLS for urgent safety measures on a lane near Winchester where a pedestrian was killed have been made to transport chiefs.

City councillor Barry Lipscomb said the death of 60-year-old Anna Stilwell on September 17 meant Well House Lane in Headbourne Worthy should be a top priority.

Cllr Lipscomb, the Tory group leader, urged the Winchester Highway and Transport Advisory Panel to take action, and expressed concern that dangerous roads could not be brought further up the list of scheduled repair jobs.

Mr Lipscomb said: "It's by no means the first accident on that spot. How can we get this road, and indeed others, into a plan with relatively short notice before we have another accident?"

Officers said the county council and police were taking action. A joint scheme, the Casualty Reduction Partnership, was launched in 2003.

The county is putting £250,000 into the project this year, which will pay for urgent road alterations after fatal accidents. The meeting heard that Well House Lane came into this category.

Safety work is also to be undertaken at the junction of St George's Street and Upper Brook Street, where Gladys Waite was killed last December.
