Trojans sprang the upset of the round when they turned a 3-1 deficit into a glorious 6-5 EHA Cup third round victory over National League Division 3 side Oxford Hawks at Stoneham Lane.

Stalwart Wayne Shepherd, who scored one of the goals in a stunning second-half fightback, described the result "as Trojans finest win for more than a decade."

And what a comeback it was - Hawks being rocked by four goals in 14 minutes as Trojans turned the tie on its head.

The free-scoring Regional League leaders got off to the best possible start, with Mavdip Rai celebrating his 21st birthday by firing them into a second minute lead.

Oxford - fourth in EHA Division 3 and three divisions above Trojans in the pyramid - hit back hard, with Ian Fletcher (10) equalising and the impressively dangerous Matt Baggs scoring twice in ten minutes to give Hawks a 3-1 lead.

Goalkeeper Steve Cole, largely under-employed in the league games so far, produced a host of fine saves to inspire Paul Hilton, whose fierce low shot into the corner on the stroke of half-time gave Trojans fresh heart.

In less than 15 minutes, Trojans went from 3-1 down to 5-3 up with a dazzling display of attacking hockey.

Within four minutes of the restart, Hilton put Trojans level and then Chris Wiseman produced a mazy dribble in the D, which took him past four defenders before setting up teenager Steve Rhodes, pictured, to secure a 4-3 lead.

Trojans weren't finished - Shepherd converting a penalty corner to drive the Stoneham side into a 5-3 lead.

But, as Trojan legs began to tire, Oxford hit back - Baggs completing a fine individual hat-trick to cut the gap to 5-4.

In Paul Hilton, Trojans always had a trump card and, with just four minutes remaining, the former England youth international carved deep into the Oxford defence to set up Peter Symonds College student Martin Gough, whose sixth goal seemed likely to clinch the victory.

But there was still a twist or turn left in the plot as Oxford refused to lie down.

Trojans had Rai sin-binned and then had skipper Campbell Williams yellow carded for a foul which led to Scott Beach making it 6-5 from a penalty stroke.

Their nine men held out for the precious last minute to clinch a memorable win.

Ironically, Trojans fourth round opponents on November 21 are Old Loughtonians, the EHA Premier Division 1 club, who ended Hamble's dreams with a 6-2 win at Satchell Lane.

Trailing to a fifth-minute Michael Hughes penalty corner, Hamble hit back through teenager Rory Marsh, but were 3-1 behind at the break.

Steve Barber put Hamble firmly back into the contest with a second soon after the interval.

But James Stedman went on to complete a hat-trick and give the Essex club a 6-2 win.

A hat-trick by Andy Galliers earned Havant a 3-0 win over West Bridgford and an awkward fourth round trip to Surbiton.
