Fame, The Mayflower

HAVING spent much of my childhood leaping from the sofa in a bid to emulate my heroes from the original Fame Academy, Fame The Musical had a lot to live up to for me.

It inspired me to take a trip back in time. Risking serious injury and broken ornaments, I couldn't resist one last go at the aerial splits made famous by the 80s TV show and film of the same name.

My attempt didn't quite live up to the explosive moves of a hugely-talented cast, but it was fun trying.

The show of dynamite dancing and breathtaking song opened to a rapturous reception at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre last night.

The action takes place at the New York High School for Performing Arts in New York City in the early 1980s.

The legendary school's pupils have extraordinary talent and boundless energy.

However, there's also a serious side. The musical deals with the pitfalls of fame for the youngsters - an eating disorder, illiteracy, drug-taking and even death.

Apart from the obvious favourite track Fame, Dancin' on the Sidewalk and The Teacher's Argument were among the best of the rest.

A brilliant finale had the audience on their feet and whooping with glee.

It left a big Fame fan very happy, and I wouldn't mind betting that I wasn't the only one to try out the moves once I returned to the comfort of my own home.

Fame runs at The Mayflower until Saturday.
