OVERTON United served up the shock of the day on Saturday when they smashed the last remaining unbeaten record in the entire Sydenhams Wessex League.

They toppled previously undefeated Division 3 table-toppers Farnborough North End 1-0 at Bridge Street to extend their own unbeaten league and cup run to eight matches.

"I'm very pleased," purred Overton United boss Paul Chambers. "Although I thought that Farnborough didn't play that well themselves, we did play some really good stuff and could have easily scored another couple of goals."

Their all-important goal came midway through the first half, Steve Green whipped in a free-kick that was flicked on at the near post and Andy Hackett took a touch to take him past his marker before drilling the ball home.

Third-placed Paulsgrove failed to take advantage of North End's demise as they were flattened 1-0 by a last-minute strike at home to Otterbourne.

The Otters last-gasp winner saw Jamie Nash break away with the ball and his pinpoint delivery picked out Jim Bedford who coolly slotted home from eight yards.

Those two results will have had fourth-placed Colden Common rubbing their hands as they made it seven straight wins with a 7-0 drubbing of Ludgershall Sports at Main Road.

Rampaging Richard Lang rammed in four of their goals and second half substitute James Atterbury came off the bench for the last half an hour to bag himself a hat-trick!

"Obviously, a couple of results have gone for us today but the most pleasing aspect is that we are starting to look the side we were last year - I'm very pleased," smiled Common chairman Cliff Banford.

It was also raining goals in the Division's only two other matches to survive Saturday's deluge.

Pete White plundered a hat-trick as Tadley also put seven goals without reply past visitors Verwood, two-goal Paul Clarkson, Stuart Carr and Tyrone Aldridge rounding off their magnificent seven.

Basement battlers Yateley Green were hit for six at home to Laverstock & Ford, four-goal Ben Read did the damage for the Wiltshire club with Ross Nicholl and Nick Newman also finding the net.
