CHRISTCHURCH toasted winning doubles from James Bailey-Pearce and Paul Rideout as they dumped SWL rivals Bemerton Heath Harlequins out of the FA Vase 4-0 at Hurn Bridge.

"This was an excellent win," purred Christchurch boss Pete Moore. "We've played very well in tricky conditions and it was a very comfortable 4-0 win.

"Steve Bernard and Bailey-Pearce also hit the woodwork and their manager, John Sainty, admitted after the match that the scoreline could have been a lot worse for them."

The Priory men got off to the perfect start after three minutes. Richard Bentley's effort was only parried by the keeper and Bailey-Pearce pounced to rifle the ball in.

Christchurch doubled their lead on the hour when Luke Whiteley's right-wing delivery was put away by Rideout and, when Bernard's long-range drive hit the upright minutes later, Rideout was on hand to bag his second and team's third goal.

The emphatic scoreline was completed late on when Bailey-Pearce tucked away a pinpoint cross from Bernard.

Former FA Vase winners Wimborne Town also chalked up a 4-0 success in their first round clash at Devon Leaguers Collompton Rangers.

Paul Roast headed the Magpies into a tenth-minute lead from a Marcus Oldbury corner and Gareth Barnes made it 2-0 from the penalty spot following a handball right on half-time.

Manager's son Scott Arnold worked a neat one-two with Oldbury before crashing home a superb 25-yard effort with Warren Doyle bagging their fourth after 87 minutes.

Two goals in the last three minutes of extra-time condemned BAT to a 3-1 exit at the hands of Erith Town.

"We should have beaten them but they seemed to want it a little bit more than us today," sighed BAT chairman Mick Geddes.

After falling behind in the opening 15 minutes, a left-footed volley by defender Dave Marden on 86 minutes earned the Tobaccomen their extra-time lifeline.

Lethal Lee Chudy helped himself to a hat-trick - which included two penalties - as AFC Newbury walloped Wallingford from the Combined Counties League 7-0 on their own patch.

"We played some very good football and had a little bit too much for them. They're not the force that you expect to face in the Wessex League," said Newbury's Jim Goslin.

Also netting for the Berkshire side were Ashley Vine, Ryan Williams, Lance Spencer and Sam Rae, with his first goal for the club.

Cowes Sports booked their place in the second round with a battling 2-1 victory over Hungerford Town at Westwood Park.

"It was a real battle out there with the wind and rain but I'm very pleased with the result," said Cowes manager Derek Ohren.

"We could have scored more goals in the first half but they threw everything at us at the end and our keeper, Ian Lloyd, has made some superb saves."

Elliott Day had already seen his header rattle the woodwork before the Islanders took a 43rd-minute lead when a Hungerford defender could only slice Simon Butler's cross into his own net.

The Berkshire outfit equalised on 65 minutes but the Yachtsmen grabbed a winner ten minutes later when Sam Hart's corner kick wasn't cleared properly and Matt Bowler slammed the ball home.

There's no stopping Division 2 leaders Lymington Town at the moment - they reeled off a tenth successive win with a 3-1 victory over Sussex League outfit Mile Oak at Southampton Road.

Paul Sims put Town ahead with a 55th-minute penalty after Danny Veal had been brought down and Danny Adams hit a post before Kevin James crossed for Phil Stone to volley in at the far post after 70 minutes.

Ten minutes later, Paul Sturmey went on a mazy run and swapped passes with Stone before smashing in a left-footed drive. The visitors' consolation came on 87 minutes.

"It's another great result for the club in what were terrible conditions but we must keep our feet on the ground and not get carried away," beamed boss John Pyatt.
