COPIES of Southampton's new Monopoly game have been flying off the shelves quicker than you can say "Do not pass Go".

The city's own long-awaited property trading game has hit the high street in time for the Christmas rush.

Game fans have been rushing to get their hands on the customised Monopoly game, which features 30 well-known Southampton landmarks including the Common, WestQuay shopping centre and the Daily Echo.

At WH Smith in Above Bar, assistant manager Mel Pooley reported that the store was on target to sell about 100 of the games in the first three days.

She said: "I feel very positive it will be one of our top selling games lines for Christmas. As more and more people know it's out there, I feel it will be on a lot of people's Christmas lists."

Miss Southampton Emily Roberts officially launched the board game at a five-star reception at the city's De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel.

Among VIP guests at the launch was Hampshire's own Mr Monopoly, Josef Kollar.

The wacky accountant had been appointed chairman of the board by games bosses at London based Winning Moves UK.

Josef, of Blackfield, who donned his Monopoly suit for the special occasion, is a self-confessed Monopoholic, having won numerous competitions.

The 59-year-old was persuaded to share some of his insider secrets about the winning the game, which was invented in America in 1934.

Southampton Monopoly promoter Graham Barnes said: "Follow these tips and you'll be laughing all the way to the bank - even if it's only the Monopoly bank."

MONOPOLY TOP TIPS:

In the early stages, stay out of jail, pay your £50 and get out there buying. In the later stages, when other players have built, stay in jail for as long as possible. You can sit there safe from rent but still collecting rent from your own investments. Buy orange. These are moderately priced properties, offer great returns and are the most frequently landed on set because of their position near to the jail.

Speculate to accumulate. Sink your money into property like it's going out of fashion. Bricks and mortar earn you dosh.

Buy houses rather than hotels. That way you can tie up all the homes to create a housing shortage.

Wise up. When negotiating with opponents weigh up who is in a strong position - and if it's you, always drive a hard bargain.

Never volunteer to take charge of the bank - it takes up too much time. It's a bit selfish but better you keep your mind on the job in hand, which is to win.

Present yourself as the type of player others won't mind losing to. This is important as Monopoly can rarely be won without the co-operation of others.

Forge friendships. Quickly get acquainted with opponents and build up relationships with them as this can help when trading starts.

Be nice, compliment everyone when they do well.
