HANNINGTON Silver Band will mark its very impressive milestone of 80 years this month with a concert in St Mary's Church, in Kingsclere.

The band was formed in 1924 by Leslie Wythe, the father of the current musical director Tony Wythe, and George Watts Snr to sing hymns in the local Methodist chapel, as there was no organ.

And that association continued through to the present day, with the chapel remaining the band's rehearsal room right up until its recent closure.

A family band, with the Watts, the Baggs and the Baldwins all forming a strong core, and at one time there was a total of 12 Wythes in the group!

Despite never having been a hardcore competition band, Hannington has still supported the Basingstoke Music Festival, participating in the Brass Band Open Section many times, and first winning in 1968.

The band's versatility has grown with age and it now provides music for all occasions, including parks, fetes, church services, concerts and private events.

The repertoire varies from classical and contemporary works to music from the shows and marches as well as some sacred music too.

In the past, Hannington (pictured) has had the good fortune to be awarded both lottery and Basingstoke council grants, due to the hard work of band chairman Alan Hancock.

These enabled the purchase of a number of new instruments with which to attract additional players, with the aim of securing the band's future.

If you are a brass player, Hannington Silver Band is always on the lookout for new members to join such an established and respected group.

This month's concert takes place in St Mary's Church, Kingsclere, on Saturday, October 30, beginning at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 for adults, inclusive of a celebratory drink, and are half-price for children.
