A WATER company is carrying out land and seabed surveys ahead of plans to replace mains supplies to the Isle of Wight.

Southern Water is launching the year-long project ahead of a scheme to replace two water mains installed under the Solent in 1980, which run from Lepe in the New Forest to Gurnard on the Island.

Project manager Mike Yung-Hok said: "These investigations are a key part of the overall scheme, which is extremely important to ensure we can continue to meet our customers' demand for water.

"It is predicted that over the next 25 years, demand for water on the Isle of Wight will increase by up to 18 per cent. The Island's water supply is provided primarily by underground sources, which are, by and large, being used to their capacity.

"By installing new water mains we will be able to transfer enough water from our reservoir at Testwood to supplement the Island's own local sources."
