IT was a big night for a big group with extra-big hearts.
The 300 heroes who gathered in Winchester spend most of their spare time helping others.
For one evening at least, it was a chance for them to relax - and an opportunity for Hampshire to simply say thank you.
Volunteers from scores of organisations across the county were invited to a special civic reception in the Great Hall.
Council leader Ken Thornber greeted each guest individually as they came into the historic building.
They enjoyed a buffet and music from the Hampshire County Youth Orchestra during the informal celebration.
Councillor Thornber said: "The aim of this year's reception is to recognise the efforts of those individuals who carry out voluntary work. They are often the unsung heroes, receiving little recognition for giving their time and effort to help others in the community.
"I hope this reception goes some way towards showing how much their hard work is appreciated."
Dozens of organisations, from young carers' groups to animal rescue centres, had representatives at the two-hour bash.
Eveline Mills, of Age Concern's Happy Bunch Club in Chandler's Ford, said she was pleased volunteers' efforts were recognised with the event.
She is the only original member of the group, which holds weekly social events, from its launch nearly 50 years ago.
She said: "A lot of people across Hampshire do a lot of work that isn't always recognised. This is a very nice thing for people to come to."
