A BITTER sweet masterpiece comes to The Nuffield this week in the form of John Osbourne's play The Entertainer.

The play stars Granville Saxton as Archie Richards, a third-rate music hall entertainer who is still driven by his dreams of stardom and is desperate to achieve the same level of success as his father.

Adding to Archie's lack of talent his situation is made direr by the fact that the year is 1956 and music hall is on its last legs.

Archie is desperate to keep his family and career together and make 'em laugh but can he, his wife and children rise to the challenge?

Granville Saxton will be a familiar face to regulars at The Nuffield as well as those who have seen him in such TV shows as Our Friends in the North, The Old Curiosity Shop, Hardwicke House and Shine on Harvey Moon.

He will be joined on stage by John Woodvine, who was last seen at The Nuffield as Polonius in Hamlet and is a familiar face thanks to his extensive television work, and John's real-life wife, Lynne Farleigh, who plays his daughter-in-law.

The Nuffield, Southampton. Thursday, 28 October to Saturday, 13 November. Tickets: from £12. Box office: 023 8067 1771.
