Two Test Valley Borough councillors will put forward a proposal to make improvements to the Greatbridge railway bridge, in Romsey, as a matter of urgency.
Mark Cooper and Sally Leach are ward councillors for Tadburn and are members of TVBC's executive committee.
Their proposal is due to be presented at the next council meeting next Thursday (October 28th).
It states that the council urgently requests the installation of appropriate signing some distance from the town, diverting large lorry traffic from the A3057 and installing flashing overheight warning signs at Greatbridge similar to those used at Sun Arch at Romsey.
Councillor Cooper said: "Test Valley's transportation and highways panel is working on the issue, as is Hampshire County Council, but there is an urgent need to progress work to prevent these unnecessary collisions before there is a much more serious accident and possibly a pedestrian fatality."
He continued: "Romsey's commercial vitality is also undermined every time an accident happens at Greatbridge because of the total disruption of traffic movement in and out of the town, often for hours at a time, when an accident happens here.
"The council as a whole needs to add its voice to the clamour from the town to deal with this issue."
