HAMPSHIRE'S Premier short-mat bowlers probably did not feel like singing on their way home from Kent but, if they had, 'Things Can Only Get Better' would have been an appropriate title following their 36-0 (243-108) humiliation.
With several key players unavailable and playing on slow mats, Hampshire were shown no mercy by the 2003 national champions.
There are few high spots for the losers but, in the second singles session, Brian Cummins (Jaguar) led 6-1 - then dropped six singles and went into the last end all square only to see his opponent Mark Wiedeholt pick up the jack with his first wood and run it into the ditch, ending up resting on it. Impossible to beat!
Maureen Hoskin, Jan and Alan Robinson (all Jaguar) alongside Jim Wood (Pirrie Park) were 7-6 up with two ends to play but suffered a similar scenario to Cummins and lost 10-7 while Alan Sparling and John Bambrough (Pirrie Park) went into the last end of their pairs all square but again failed to win.
