ONE of the hidden treasures of Winchester has been re-opened to the public.
The crypt under Winchester Cathedral has rarely been open in recent times. Last year its doors were opened for only one day.
The high water level and soft stone flooring forced its closure, but this year lightweight rubber matting has been laid to protect the surface.
The crypt is open for guided tours which run Monday to Saturday at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm. The maximum number on each tour is 12 and entry is free.
Visitors can catch sight of the Antony Gormley sculpture Sound II. There are also empty caskets, including one believed to be that of St Swithun, a former bishop.
