An Evening with John Cole, Haymarket theatre, Basingstoke.

THE IRONY of the evening was when John Cole spoke about the growing lack of interest people have in politics.

However, having glanced around the theatre, I could only see an audience - admittedly not a packed one - which was enthusiastic, keen and, above all, extremely interested in what the ex-BBC political editor had to say.

With an evening which was full of anecdotes covering subjects ranging from Churchill to Wilson and Attlee to Thatcher, as well as a good hour of questions and answers, I couldn't help feeling that people at home were missing out.

John Cole, 76, was funny, calm and friendly as he spoke about his time as a journalist.

It was an evening with a man who could teach us a lot about the people behind the doors of power at Westminster.
