BUCKETFULS of money donated by people using various car parks during the Southampton Boat Show is to help local people living with cancer.
A cheque for £1,847.81 has been presented to the Daily Echo-backed Macmillan Cancer Relief South Hampshire Appeal by Associated British Ports in Southampton.
The donation will help fund a £1m cancer information and support centre, being built at Southampton General Hospital.
ABP head Andrew Kent handed over the cheque to Macmillan appeal manager Connie McConachie.
The money was raised from an idea to open up private car parks by local security officer Steven Russell, who works at the port during the Boat Show.
Securicor employee Steven said: "We all know how horrendous the parking is when the Southampton Boat Show is on.
"However, with the co-operation of ABP, local residents and businesses, we managed to open various private car parks for the sole use of boat show attendees. I am delighted at raising such a tremendous amount."
The centre, which should open next year, will offer support to anyone affected by cancer. Facilities will include complementary therapies, counselling, Internet access and stylish wigs.
