A Fareham football club is planning an ambitious fundraising project to bring a £1m soccer school to the town.

AFC Portchester is kicking off a campaign to raise cash for a massive £1m purpose-built complex for budding young Wayne Rooneys.

The 500-strong club, which boasts 26 multi-age teams, has been awarded the county's first ever FA Community Club Award.

The FA has pledged 65 per cent of the £1m needed to build the new dream complex at Wicor Recreation - complete with boardroom, training gym, changing rooms, bar and floodlit all-weather pitch - if the club finds the rest.

It's a tall order, but club secretary, Paul Kelly, is confident community members will come up trumps for a facility that will benefit the whole area.

He said: "We're really excited about this. It's such an achievement to get this award.

The Hampshire FA is really behind us now. All we need is to get more and more people to help us raise the money. After that - the sky is the limit."

With two senior teams, one under-18, 15 under-11s to under-16s, six mini-soccer under sevens to under tens and two girls sides - the club coaches players from a huge spectrum of the community and want to expand even more.

The club needs to raise £2,000 in order to submit plans to Fareham Borough Council. It can take the next step from there.

It has already planned a Family Fun Run to take place on November 28 and organisers are confident they can find in the cash to cover the cost.

The club is also urging people to join their licensed lottery that they hope could raise £10,000 a year if all club members joined up.

Chairman Steve Wood, said: "This is a really great opportunity for the area and we would like to get everyone behind us.

"We have consulted with other users of Wicor Recreation early this year and have had mainly positive feedback.

"The new facilities will benefit all the different groups that use the recreation ground now. It's a really exciting project which is starting to come together now."
