The Magazine Lane section of Southampton Water - which lies in the shadows of the city's huge container port - has again produced a superb specimen sole, weighing in at 2lb 11oz.

Fourteen-year-old Steven Perry from the Waterside apprehended the specimen after baiting a size 2 Aberdeen hook with ragworm fished at close range. The oversize flattie sets a new personal best for the Applemore College student.

l The 160-plus competitors who turned up for the Pro Tackle Charity Open held along the Southbourne beaches were met by horrendous conditions - but still a surprising number of fish were caught.

Andrew Terry, a 40-year-old security officer who won the event in 1998 with a small-eyed-ray, was once again in match-winning form. On this occasion he beached a brace of bass along with a small tub gurnard together totalling 5lb 2.75oz to collect the £1,000 top prize.

Members of the Christchurch club organised the event and proceeds went to the Victoria School for handicapped children. Twenty-seven competitors returned fish to the scales, comprising bass, garfish, red mullet, red gurnard and plaice.

Runner-up was visiting angler Eddie Smart from Plymouth who landed a solitary bass weighing 2lb 8.75oz. Not only did he collect second prize but he also picked up £100 for winning his section and carried off the pools for beaching the heaviest round fish. Just for good measure, Smart also teamed up with S Pucker to win the pairs section worth another £100.

The winner of the white section, who also collected £100 for his efforts, was Brian Fooks from Weymouth with 10.75oz while the remaining section was won by P Penticost with 8oz.

The pool for the heaviest round fish was collected by Andrew Hardman, the owner of New and Used Fishing Tackle at Pokesdown. He used ragworm to tempt a small plaice weighing just 7.25oz.

In third position was Jimmy Maynard with 1lb 1.5oz followed by M Whitemore 1lb, Paul Harcuss 15.25oz, Mark Mockeridge 13.25oz, R Barr 12, J Bushnell 11.5oz and Paul Johnson who is a member of Boscombe & Southbourne SFC. He landed a brace of red mullet weighing 11.75oz on his first cast of the day.

Both the England men's and ladies' teams put in an outstanding performance during the World Shore Angling Championship held at Weymouth.

The five-strong men's team of which included Darren Phillips who has just moved from Fareham to Andover and Ian Golds from Portsmouth, won all four matches for a comprehensive victory.

To put the icing on the cake Steve Allmark from Dover collected the individual gold medal while Ian Golds settled for a well-earned silver. France were the runner-ups in the men's section followed by Germany and Wales.

The England ladies' team also had a golden glow, scooping the team medal while Pauline Ferry picked up the individual silver medal and Sherryl Bellfield was awarded bronze.

Portugal were the runner-ups in the team event followed by Italy and Germany. This was the first time that both the men's and ladies' team had won gold in the same year.

Next year the World Boat Championships are being held out of Weymouth.

Sixty-six competitors lined the beach at Rockley for the first round of the Wessex senior flounder league, although flounders were in short supply.

Graham Berry won the event with a solitary flattie weighing 1lb 8.25oz to nudge out Chris Albiston on 1lb 5.75oz, Adam Harding (1lb 3oz) and Tony Ockwell (1lb 3oz). The next match in the series will be held on October 15 with fishing from 7pm to 10pm along the Hamworthy and Rockley sections.

A £200 top prize is on offer when the Lymington club stage their annual Shingle Bank Open on Oct0ber 23 with fishing from 7pm to midnight. Dogfish, pouting and a few codling are expected to dominate during the event which has a £7 prize tag plus pools and a two-man team event. More details next week.

Two open events are being held on Sunday with the Dennings Tackle Open being staged along the Ferry Bridge section of Chesil with fishing from 2pm to 8pm. The event has a £300 top prize and tickets are £5 plus pools. Competitors will be restricted to just six fish of each species. Details from Dennning Tackle on 01305 783145. The event will be hosted by members of Weymouth Angling Society and it will double up as a Penn Point fixture.

Hamworthy Royal British Legion angling section are staging an open event at Baiter, Rockley and Hamworthy with fishing from 7.30am to 1pm on Sunday. The match, which has a £200 top prize, is being sponsored by Wessex Angling Centre.
