REGULARS at a Bursledon pub are going bonkers over conkers as they prepare to take on the professionals.

Staff and customers at The Jolly Sailor pub in Lands End Road are busy practising their conker-skills in time for a visit by the French national team.

The team, who are sponsored by Flybe, are calling at the pub on their way back from the World Conker Championship in Peterborough, before they fly home from Southampton Airport. There, they will take part in a challenge match with a team made up of the landlord and landlady of The Jolly Sailor, Adrian Jenkins and Jackie Cosens, and some of their regulars.

"It is a bit of fun," said Adrian.

"We have been busy collecting conkers to have a bit of a practice.

"It is a bit of a traditional thing that has died a death in this country. So we are rekindling our youth."

Despite the fact that the French National Conker team could even be the world champions when they arrive, the Jolly Sailor team is feeling confident.

"We are not professionals, put it that way, but we are always as good as everybody else!" said Adrian.
