DUMMER'S Scott Watson has clinched the Hampshire PGA's final "major" Championship of the 2004 season.

He won the Meachers Masters Championship at Barton-on-Sea Golf Club with a record-breaking 11-under-par score of 133.

Watson's rounds of 66 and 67 gave him victory by four clear shots from Mark Williamson and Mark Treleaven, with David Porter a shot further adrift in fourth place.

Watson had shared the half-way lead with Lee-on-the-Solent's James Ablett after both players had compiled opening rounds of 66 (six-under-par) in the prestigious championship.

Watson continued to make progress as the afternoon round got under way, picking up a further three shots over the opening 15 holes of his second round.

Then, after turning into the breeze for the closing three holes, Watson parred the difficult par 3 16th, eagled the par five 17th and made a good par at the 18th for a round of 67.

Second place was shared by Williamson, who stormed through the field with an afternoon round of 67, and Treleaven, who added a two-under-par round of 70 to his excellent opening 67.

James Ablett's progress had been halted by a lost ball at the fifth and he was forced to settle for a tie for fifth place with Alresford's Rhys ap Iolo.

Fifteen of the 41 competing professionals broke par for the 36-hole tournament and, in all, there were 29 sub-par rounds on the day.

"The weather was perfect," said Hampshire PGA secretary David Wheeler.

"There was only a hint of a breeze and players took full advantage of the excellent condition of the Barton links.

"The Meachers Masters is well-established as the Hampshire PGA's end-of-season finale and the Barton-on-Sea club provides an excellent venue for the Championship."

The Meachers Championship was being played for the tenth time and for the sixth consecutive year at Barton-on-Sea.
