FORMER Victorian and Australian batsman Dean Jones has called for a grandstand at the MCG to be named after Shane Warne.

"If they don't, it's an insult," Jones said as the Hampshire captain finished the first Test at Chinnaswamy Stadium just one wicket behind Muttiah Muralitharan's world record of 532.

Warne bowled 13 unsuccessful overs on the final day against India.

He was unable to take any of the four wickets on offer as Michael Kasprowicz and Jason Gillespie shared the scraps in India's final innings of 239 that sent them stumbling to a 217-run defeat.

There were half-chances, a drop from Gilchrist and two uncontrolled strokes that only just fell away from fielders but at other stages, Warne was hit to and over the fence by big-hitting tailenders Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh.

Warne's 13 overs cost 55 runs and, in seven Tests in India, he has now taken just 22 wickets at an average of 51 with a strike rate 95.

Gilchrist said: "India played really well. They applied themselves and rode their luck.

"Shane could have had Rahul Dravid out last night, I dropped one off him, and he had a few just miss. I always thought he'd be the one to get the wickets but it was one of those days. He'll get to that world record, though - it's inevitable."

With a packed schedule coming up, Warne has the chance to build a handy lead over Muralitharan, and is almost certain to take the record in the second Test at Chennai, which starts on Thursday.

"It won't be a distraction at all - we've been there and done that already," said Gilchrist in reference to Warne drawing level with Muralitharan at Cairns earlier this year before the Sri Lankan skipped clear again.

"We've been through this process and so has Shane. There will be a lot of focus on Warney and his numbers at the end of the game and there will be comparisons why he, as a spinner, isn't getting the numbers Harbhajan is getting and so on.

"But he did a great job in this game.

"If he gets eight wickets this series and they're all VVS Laxman - he got him twice here - as a captain I'm taking that, because he's haunted us, that guy."
