LAST week's FA Cup hero Lee Chudy turned villian on Saturday when he was sent off in Newbury's 2-1 victory over VTFC at Faraday Road.

Chudy, who clambered off the substitutes' bench to score twice in last Saturday's stunning 4-2 FA Cup win over Conference South Basingstoke Town, was sent off after 75 minutes for a second bookable offence.

Chris Geary had given Guy Whittingham's men a 55th-minute lead with a fierce angled shot that the visitors' keeper got a hand on but couldn't prevent from finding the bottom corner of the net.

VT's Stuart Brown then played in former Saint Kevin Gibbens who beat the home keeper at the second attempt five minutes later, only for Newbury substitute Danny Taylor to snatch an 85th-minute winner for the ten men.

"It was a very close affair today but we've just managed to sneak the points," said Newbury's Jim Goslin.

Newbury's neighbours Thatcham Town held Wimborne Town to a 1-1 draw at Waterside Park. Richard Witt fired the home side into a 28th-minute lead, John Lamb replying for the Magpies on 61 minutes.

League leaders Winchester City's 7-1 romp at Cowes Sports on Friday night took them eight points clear of second-placed Fareham Town who suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat at the hands of fifth bottom Alton Town.

"Although it was a game of few chances, it was a good battle out there. We've managed to get all three points and that's Fareham's first defeat in 11 matches," smiled Alton chairman Jim McKell.

The game's only goal came after 20 minutes when Richard McCann found John Edwards, who rifled the ball into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Hamworthy United and Christchurch drew a blank as did Moneyfields and Bournemouth Poppies, who also shared a goalless draw.

"The match was almost played like a friendly, we're happy with a point though and unbeaten in six games now after a bad start," reflected Moneyfields chairman Gary Foster.

It's now 11 straight defeats for pointless basement battlers Downton following their 5-0 beating by Lymington & New Milton on Friday night, while Hamble ASSC are only two places above them after going down 3-0 to Gosport Borough the same evening.

BAT assistant manager Danny Bowers was pleased after watching his side secure a 2-0 away win at a blustery Portland United.

"The conditions were very hard and it was a bit scrappy as there was a gale force wind blowing," said Bowers. "We actually played better against the wind in the second half and it was a professional performance."

A fine solo run from midfield and finish saw Dave Lewis give BAT an eighth-minute lead but they had to wait until the last minute for their second when substitute Dean Coles - who had only been on for five minutes - headed in Paul Masters' cross.

AFC Totton moved into the second round of the Hampshire Senior Cup after winning 2-1 at Combined Counties League Cove.

"We're not at our best again but it was a pleasing victory after struggling for the last couple of games," said Totton boss Stuart Ritchie.

Gareth Byers found the net from Steele Saunders' ball across the penalty area on 30 minutes and, although Cove levelled on 75, Mark Osman grabbed the winner a couple of minutes later following good work by full back Ben Buckman.

It's two home defeats in four days for FA Cup heroes Brockenhurst who were beaten 3-2 by SWL rivals Andover at Grigg Lane.

Mat Styles gave Andover the lead on 25 minutes but Brock were back on terms four minutes before half time through Alan Wright. Justin Bennett restored Lions' advantage in the second half only for Lee Winsall to conjure up a second equaliser for Brock.

But straight from the restart, Andover's Vince Rusher advanced unchallenged to rifle a winner into the top corner.

"We had Jason Lovell missing today with flu but I take comfort from the fact that we gave a full-strength Andover side a game and pushed them all the way," said Brock boss Graham Kemp.
