In a shock move, ferry operator P&O has announced that it is scrapping its Ports-mouth to France routes in a bid to save money.
All crossings to Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg are to cease.
The company will also shed a total of 1,200 jobs from across its operation.
The only P&O route to remain in Portsmouth will be to Bilbao in Spain.
The firm blames the rise of the budget airlines and changing holiday habits.
The Portsmouth routes will be scrapped, say the company, by early 2006.
