Sir.-I write regarding a letter published in The Gazette on August 27, headed "Questions over licence checks".
The writer was under the impression that the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) had carried out a check on private hire driver Anthony Middleton at the request of Basingstoke council.
I would like to point out that the check carried out by the council was done under the arrangements that existed before the launch of the CRB back in March 2002.
The CRB had, therefore, no involvement in this case.
-Mark J Favager, head of communications, Criminal Records Bureau.
