A LOCAL resident, of German origin, has been asking me what we do here in England to celebrate the start of a child's school life.
Apparently, in Germany, there are services held in the local church, with relatives joining in and making the preparations special.
The following day the child starts school, then, on return, is treated to the family gathering round and making the day memorable by asking questions and giving encouragement.
The child is given a big cornet-shaped bag full of little knick-knacks, for school use, and other treats.
There are many residents of Brookvale who have grown up in other countries.
I would love to hear from you about how you remember your first day at school being celebrated.
MORRISONS: Is well under way with its refurbishment of Safeway.
Unfortunately, the store's area adjacent to Deep Lane is a regular eyesore, with litter blowing around.
One resident has persistently asked for someone to remove the rubbish, but not much seems to be done.
Perhaps if more residents were to speak to customer services, we will be able to enjoy a well-kept community once again.
SKITTLES: Tonight, at 8pm, in the village hall. If you haven't yet got a ticket, call Cathy on 413993.
