Romsey Town underlined their progress in the Wessex League with two fine wins this week, writes Ian Henderson.
Last Saturday's win at Ringwood was followed by a 2-1 success over local rivals Stockbridge at the Bypass Ground on Wednesday night (see report below).
Manager Trevor Holmes was without midfielders Andy Fung and Paul Smith for the trip to Ringwood, but Simon Geddes and Dean Constable slotted in well in their places.
Town took the lead after 20 minutes when Andy Kemp and Geddes combined well to set up Simon De'ath to score from close range.
But Town took theire foot off the pedal and defensive mistakes gifted the home side two goals before the break. It needed a fine goal from Eddie Carlin to see them level before the interval.
His corner from the right was returned to him and he beat two men before slotting the ball into the far corner to level things at 2-2.
Town looked the better side after the restart and the winner came on the hour when Constable's speed took him in to the home penalty area before being upended.
De'ath stepped up to convert the penalty and it proved to be the winner, despite the same player squandering several opportunities to increase the lead.
Town 2, Stockbridge 1 Town welcomed back Fung for Wednesday night's game, but skipper Paul King was missing, Simon Woodley moving back to replace him.
They created early chances for both De'ath and Constable before Stocks took a surprise lead after 20 minutes through Gavin Flye.
It took Romsey until the 55th minute to draw level, Carlin playing in Constable who used his power to force the ball home at the near post.
They went on to dominate the game and the winner arrived with 15 minutes to go when Carlin beat the Stockbridge offside trap to slot the ball home.
"It was the best I've seen us play for a very long time," said Holmes. "We look like we can make an impact in this league and the fans are coming back to watch us, which is very encouraging."
